Leaving your pet somewhere new is stressful — for both of you. A good boarding facility is upfront about its rates, its routine, and how it handles a pet that’s anxious or unwell. Here’s how to weigh up your options before you book.

What to check
- Vaccination requirements. Reputable kennels and catteries require proof of current vaccination (often including kennel cough for dogs) — a good sign they take health seriously.
- Rates and what’s included. Is it per night or per day? Are food, medication, exercise and pick-up/drop-off extra? Long stays sometimes get a discount.
- The setup. Standard kennel, indoor suite, or a cattery condo? Climate control, daily exercise and a vet on call all matter for a comfortable stay.
- Daycare option. A facility that also does daycare lets your pet visit first, so boarding day isn’t their first time there.
- Updates. Some offer photos or webcam check-ins so you can see your pet is settled.

Before you book
Visit if you can, or ask for a virtual look. Bring vaccination records, your pet’s usual food, and notes on any medication or anxiety. Ask what the daily routine looks like, who’s on site overnight, and what happens if your pet falls ill. A facility that answers plainly — and shows you around — is one you can leave your pet with.
Common questions
How much does pet boarding cost?
It depends on the animal, the room type and the length of stay. We pull the real rates each business publishes so you can check up front — look for the “rates online” flag on each listing.
What vaccinations does my pet need to board?
Most facilities require current core vaccinations, and many ask dogs for kennel cough (C5) cover. Check the specific facility’s requirements well before your stay — see pet vaccinations explained.
